Rainbows are one of the many activity subjects your children will experience in Montessori preschool. Winnetka kids love to do things that revolve around the rainbow, a hallmark of Montessori education. Defining Rainbow Activities
Rainbows are a scientific phenomenon that has fascinated people since time immemorial, and the fascination begins when we’re children. A rainbow activity is any task involving rainbows used by children at your Montessori preschool. Winnetka students learn by weaving educational opportunities into engaging rainbow activities that are enjoyable and provide multiple developmental benefits. Demonstrate a Rainbow A clear jar filled with water, a bright flashlight, and a dark surface are all you need to show how light is bent into the colors of the rainbow. Simply place the jar of water on the dark surface and shine the flashlight through it from different angles. Refraction occurs as the light passes through the water, creating a crude spectrum of colors on the dark surface. Rainbow Ice Ordinary food coloring, water, and an ice tray can produce frozen examples of the colors of the rainbow. The example can be used for teaching color mixing as well, by adding cubes of different colors to a cup of water to see how they combine when they melt. This rainbow is scientific in nature since placing a cube in water demonstrates how convection, the dispersion of one fluid into another, works in a visual way. Finger Painting Rainbows Painting is a great way for kids to create rainbows of their own, and getting fully involved in finger painting is a wonderful way to hone fine motor skills, enhance critical thinking, and keep small children energetically learning. The play can begin with imaginative rainbows of their own creations and you can focus on aligning colors into correct positions on the spectrum over time by using the above demonstration. Rainbows and Diversity The rainbow represents the colors of the spectrum, but it also stands for diversity in our society. By learning how every color of the spectrum deserves an equal place beside the others, Montessori preschoolers learn about acceptance of difference and inclusion of others. Learning about the way all of the colors combine to form one illuminating light is a great analogy for how the one human family of our planet can work together to achieve great things. These are only the tip of the iceberg of great rainbow activities for Montessori preschool. Any type of activities that involve the colors of the rainbow can be used, and that opens the door to a wealth of educational opportunities. Comments are closed.
