The California climate is starting to pick up in heat. As daily highs start hitting the high 80s, your preschooler might care for a dip in the pool. However, the dangers of deep water might not be obvious to them. At around three-years-old, your child likely hasn’t developed a strong sense of self-preservation. When children are on summer break from the Montessori preschool in Winnetka, their parents are advised to follow the below tips. Have your preschooler use the Buddy System
Regardless of age, a great safety measure is to have a pool buddy. A buddy can get help if anything goes wrong, reducing the chances of drowning. If your preschooler is taking a dip into a backyard pool, by default you’re the pool buddy. Your child should never be unattended, as they are never left alone in their Montessori preschool. There is no substitute for supervision. Accidents can happen without notice. If you have to step away for the restroom or take a phone call, tell your preschooler to stay out of the pool until you get back. If your child might wander in without you, have them accompany you. Don’t leave toys in the pool Toys floating in the pool after swimtime can tempt your preschooler into leaning over the pool to grab it. To prevent accidental falls, remove all toys and floating devices after swimming. For added safety, secure the pool with a lockable fence and keep your child indoors when you can’t supervise them. Exploring outside is beneficial, but only if they can do it safely. Install a lockable fence around your pool Your community might already have laws and regulations to protect children from pool accidents. Regardless, it’s a great idea to enclose the pool with a suitable fence. For increased safety, include a child-proof locking mechanism. The best lock option requires a key or number combination. Your child won’t be able to jimmy the fence open. Teach your preschooler swimming tips Familiarize yourself with these tips from the American Red Cross, and sign your child up for swimming lessons. In the worst case scenario, your child should have the basic skills to fight for survival, including learning the backfloat. Comments are closed.
