Circle time in the Montessori preschool is when all of the children in the class and the teacher gather together in a circle, spaced out enough so that each child has an equal view of everyone else in the circle. Chairs are optional, but most of these games will be more fun from a seated position on the floor. Blanket Hideaway
Children take turns curling up under a blanket while the other children make a game of pretending to look around for that child. Finally, the teacher announces that the child can’t be found and WHOOSH! She sweeps the blanket off her head and is revealed to the whole class. Balloon Bounce The object of the game is to keep a balloon moving around the circle without holding it or allowing it to touch the floor. Variations include things like choosing a random child’s name to bounce it to. I Spy This classic children’s game is great for circle time in the Montessori preschool. A designated starter picks an object and gives hints of what the object is until one of the kids guesses correctly. The correct guesser then chooses an object and the game continues. Defining Objects The teacher begins by placing an object from the classroom in the middle of the circle. The first child on her right (or left) names something descriptive about the object, and then the next child does the same until all of the kids have named something. Make it a game of discussing the descriptive choices and how they apply to the object at hand. Target Practice Place a large shallow dish in the center of the circle and allow the children to take turns trying to bounce an inflated balloon into the dish. The balloon must stay in the dish to count, so this game is not as easy as it sounds. The game ends when all the children have had a turn or when the balloon has landed in the dish a named number of times. Circle time is often used for announcements, storytelling, and other group activities, but adding some fun Montessori activities will keep the class stimulated and help them develop fine motor skills and social interaction.
