Children of daycare age probably won’t be awake when the actual new year begins, but they still sense the excitement of the approaching event and want to be a part of the celebrations. Joining in gives children a sense of inclusion, and helps them develop important social skills. You may have to ring in the daycare new year a few hours earlier than the adult New Year, but that means double the fun for you. Countdown Clock
Montessori daycare children can make a clock using a paper plate clock face, construction paper hands, and a pin to hold the hands in place. As New Year’s Eve wears on, have your child adjust the hours and minutes to the start of a new year. You may want to fudge the time a little for festivities that don’t actually make it to midnight. At midnight by the clock, give your child an old calendar to dispose of as a symbol of clearing out the old and moving into the new. Hide the Clock This game is a fun party game for all ages. Set the alarm on a wind-up clock or cellphone to ring in 5 minutes. One person hides the phone and sets the alarm, then the rest of the group searches for it. If the alarm goes off before the clock is found, the same person gets to hide it again. If someone finds the clock first, it becomes their turn to hide it. Noise Making Children seem to enjoy making noise. Sometimes they call it music, but other times it is simply noise done to explore the sound being created. New Year’s is the perfect opportunity for noise, and exciting activity is to encourage your child to think of all the different ways to make noise that she can-- and then make noise with them. Since she probably won’t be up to celebrate the actual end of the year, you can let her celebrate the New Year just before bed instead. This move might even tire her out so that she sleeps through later celebrations. The most important thing about major celebrations is that children need to be included. Most holidays are based on traditions that stretch back many years, but they can be lost if the excitement and enjoyment are not passed down through the generations. Comments are closed.
