Every parent wants the best educational opportunities for their children, often comparing play-based preschools and traditional education to the Montessori preschool approach. And even though results may vary from one student to the next, there are some very good reasons why Montessori is worth looking into. The Classroom Environment
The Montessori preschool is called a Children’s House and is designed so that children feel more comfortable and confident. The furniture is child-sized. Decorations are placed at the eye level of the children. Even the way the rooms are decorated and colored are intended to promote comfort and reduce visual distraction. Instead of learning specific subjects during set periods throughout each day, children move freely from activity to activity spending more or less time on individual activities as needed before moving on to another. The Montessori Classroom Montessori preschool classrooms are child-centered, where the traditional classroom is often teacher-centered. Instead of placing the focus on what the teacher says and does, the Montessori Method focuses on play-based student activities and teachers observe, guide, and assist children individually. Montessori Goals The Montessori Method is a holistic approach to education. In addition to using carefully designed-- and often multi-purpose-- educational tools to impart academic information children learn:
Montessori Philosophy The foundation of the Montessori Method is the philosophy that children learn best in an environment that is more natural and less restricted. In the process of choosing and undertaking a wide variety of self-correcting play-based activities, children learn to cooperate with others, solve problems, and take responsibility for their own actions. An Established Doctrine Maria Montessori developed the Montessori Method very early in the 1900s, and bona fide Montessori preschools stick to the method as she developed it. It has been research-proven to improve the developmental and educational success of young students for over a century, including those with some learning disorders such as autism. Where traditional school systems are constantly introducing new strategies or educational models, the Montessori Method remains constant and effective. It is easy to confuse a play-based preschool with a Montessori preschool, but learning through enjoyable activities is where the similarity ends. Montessori education is more child-centered and promotes individualism, self-esteem, and awareness of one’s presence in the world and society. Comments are closed.
