Preschool children love to learn, but they have difficulty working with abstract numbers. Using legos to provide a concrete basis for numbers. This makes it easier for them to learn about math, from sorting and counting to multiplication and working with fractions. Counting Exercises
Legos are ready-made preschool activities in sorting and counting. Children can begin by sorting legos in colors and sizes. They can count the number of pegs on lego blocks, or simply count the legos in a box. Stacking legos in sets teach them counting skills and prepares them for abstract concepts like place values. Addition and Subtraction It can be challenging to imagine concepts like addition and subtracting. With legos, those concepts take on a visual aspect that makes learning easier. Even better, working with legos to work out word problems prepares them for more advanced learning by connecting the idea of manipulating numbers to physical activities. Multiplying Brick Towers Using towers made from a specific number of bricks, preschoolers will be able to see what 2 times 3 looks like. This visual aspect simplifies multiplication and division into an exercise that is more like playing a game than doing math. With enough blocks, children will be able to easily manipulate larger numbers in creative multiplication and division tower building. Fractions With Legos Lego blocks are excellent for demonstrating how fractions work. You can use different sized blocks for this, or simply take apart towers in uniform sections to show how pieces can be put together to form a whole. For example, 1 tower made of 4 blocks can be taken apart to show what ¼, ½, and ¾ look like rather than trying to puzzle things out with written numbers. Building things with legos relies on mathematical ideas, even when the kids are not aware of the concepts they are using. By manipulating blocks in different ways, preschoolers unknowingly use them as a tool for STEM education. They even provide a basic introduction to advanced math like algebra when children learn to calculate how many blocks are needed to reach their desired building goal. Comments are closed.
