Hands-on learning is a central part of the Montessori preschool classroom. Play-based activities give kids an enjoyable way to learn new things, and that gives them an incentive to pursue more educational activities. Play-based activities are still teaching lessons, only presented in a way that is appealing to young minds Alphabet Archaeology
Place letter shapes (think refrigerator magnets) in a shallow box and cover them lightly with sand. Montessori preschool children then take turns using a cosmetics brush to uncover letters. When a letter has been revealed the child with the brush pronounces a word that starts with the letter in question and then passes the brush to the next amateur archaeologist. Place Puzzles Puzzles that feature maps of the world or the United States are a great way for children to soak up some geography as they play. To add a familiar note to the game, use a local map pasted to a piece of poster board and then cut into puzzle pieces. This game teaches hand-eye coordination, critical thinking, place names, and basic geography. Building with Blocks Ordinary children's blocks are a useful way to teach a number of subjects including basic shapes, counting, and scientific concepts such as the inclined plane and such advanced concepts as creating a keystone to strengthen bridges and columns. Fabricating Fun Pipe Cleaners are a wonderful toy for learning to create shapes and letters. You can either ask children to create specific shapes, numbers, and letters or simply give them the flexible pipe cleaners and allow each child to create their own mini-sculptures. It is a good idea to begin with 2-dimensional shapes but you can work into more complex 3-D constructs as the children become more adept. Use the activities discussed here as a starting point and develop some home-based activities of your own. The main idea is to present your child with fun things to do with lessons like reading, math, or science built into the activity itself. If you need more ideas for fun activities, talk to your Montessori preschool teacher or looks for books on the subject online or at your local library. Comments are closed.
