Developed by Maria Montessori in 1907, the Montessori Method defines your child’s Montessori preschool environment. It differs from traditional public school education in numerous ways and has shown positive results for kids all over the world including those with both physical and learning disabilities. To determine whether the Montessori environment is right for your child, it will help to understand a little of what sets Montessori apart. Play-Based Learning
Children are the primary focus of the Montessori preschool classroom. For example, they “work” at various play-based activities they have chosen for themselves. The idea is that children are learning even when they are at play, and making the process more enjoyable helps them focus on their work. Addressing the Whole Child The Montessori Method is interested in more than rote memorization. It addresses personal likes and dislikes, putting an emphasis on developing social and academic skills that can be applied in the real world. From learning about acceptable social behavior to the importance of physical activity, the Montessori Method’s primary goal is to produce children who are ready to play an active role in their community. Self-Confidence At the heart of the Montessori Method, self-confidence is an important part of child development. Children who are confident in themselves are more likely to try new things, take on new challenges, and work well with others. Because it is such a powerful tool, building self-esteem is often considered the most important task of Montessori teaching. Diversity and Acceptance There are many different types of people in the world, from different genders to different nationalities to people who look, act or talk differently than we do. Montessori education embraces diversity and encourages young minds to not only accept those differences but to treasure them as unique traits. Montessori learning may not be the best option for every child, but it has demonstrated many amazing results. Originally developed to help teach children with learning disabilities, the Montessori Method has a lot to offer children and a history of teaching them successfully. Comments are closed.
