Your child’s Montessori preschool will be investigating International Women’s Day during the month of March. International Women’s Day, or IWD, is an annual event supporting the efforts of women all over the world. It is a day to recognize the achievements of women and honor those who have taken up the cause on behalf of others. Origins of IWD
International Women’s Day was established in 1911, during a time when women were fighting for equality in society and the workplace. It came about as the result of women trying to organize and demand equal treatment in the workplace, including shorter work hours, and an increase in workplace safety. 2020 IWD Theme This year’s IWD theme is “Each for Equality,” which underscores the role of women in all things, from the home to the workplace. Emerging at a time when women were not allowed to vote throughout most of the world, IWD became a symbol of the struggle of women to gain the same recognition and acceptance as their male counterparts-- a struggle that is as valid today as it was more than a century ago. Collective Individualism Behind the idea of “Each for Equality” is the statement that we are all part of a greater collective. The woman’s role is multifaceted but often underrated or even blatantly disregarded. Whether we look at women as individuals or as a group, one obvious truth is that women are rarely treated as equals and often treated as inferior to others despite their magnificent contributions to society, science, and the workforce. Values of IWD There are 10 core values honored on IWD. Each one addresses the hardships faced by women over the years and honors the achievements of those who took risks and rose above the unfair attitudes of their times. Many of these same values are central to the practical social issues taught in Montessori preschools. These values are:
Because the tenets of IWD are similar to the social lessons taught in Montessori preschools, incorporating IWD lessons into the daily work plan is a simple matter of practicing lessons that are already being taught such as equality, fairness, grace, and courtesy. IWD provides a perfect backdrop to illustrate why these things are important and how the world suffers when such critical values fall to the wayside. Comments are closed.
