By the time they are in preschool children are ready to begin helping out around the house. Being assigned routine tasks is also beneficial in childhood development. Regular tasks affect everything from fine motor control to critical thinking skills and social interaction. Learning ResponsibilityHaving a routine that includes activities like cleaning or sorting teaches preschool children to accept responsibility, and builds self-esteem in their capabilities. The routine itself provides consistency, giving children a stable pattern to anchor their day around. For some children, these persistent events can have a profound effect on their attitude and behavior.
Real-Life Experience Using tools and instruments made for small hands to assist with tasks around the house gives preschool children real-life, practical experience. Doing so will build physical stamina and build better hand-eye coordination. Helping prepare meals teaches children to slice, measure, mix, and eventually learn to cook. These are the kinds of practical life experiences that Maria Montessori considered critical skills when she was developing the Montessori Method. Teamwork Working with other families in a concerted effort such as tidying up the family room, or setting the table for dinner teaches important social skills that carry over to the preschool, the community, and beyond. Not only do they learn the benefits of teamwork, but they also discover that some tasks are easier when more people are involved. Time Management Arranging your preschooler’s routine around completing less enjoyable tasks before moving on to more interesting ones helps children develop determination and learn to manage their time more effectively. This also helps teach abstract concepts like telling time and learning the order of days in the week, month, and year. After becoming toddlers, children are at the perfect age to take on small chores at home. Begin with things like following their bedtime and morning routines, and slowly build to include picking up their rooms and on to helping out with other jobs around the house and in the yard.
